"With that in mind, I have taken a close look at the candidates who are running against Patty Murray and I have decided to endorse Clint Didier in the race for United States Senate. "Clint brings a passion and enthusiasm to this race which will motivate grassroots Republicans to get out and do the work necessary to achieve victory. "His background as a farmer and small business owner will enable him to bring about a sense of fiscal discipline which is sorely needed back in Washington D.C. "I am proud to support Clint Didier and I encourage my fellow Republicans to get behind him." JULY 10. 2010 A former Washington state Attorney General, state GOP chair and 3-term state legislator says Republicans need to get behind Clint Didier in the race for Patty Murray’s Senate seat. “I am proud to support Clint Didier,” said the Ken Eikenberry, “and I encourage my fellow Republicans to get behind him.” Didier’s ability to excite the party base and ‘get out the vote’ was a key factor for Eikenberry reaching the conclusion that Didier is the best candidate to take on Patty Murray: “Clint brings a passion and enthusiasm to this race, which will motivate grassroots Republicans to get out and do the work necessary to achieve victory,” said Eikenberry. “Mr. Eikenberry’s statement clearly shows that Didier is the strongest candidate on fiscal issues,” said campaign advisor, Kathryn Serkes. “His background as a farmer and small business owner will enable him to bring about a sense of fiscal discipline which is sorely needed back in Washington D.C.,” said Eikenberry. “I’ve always found Gen. Eikenberry to be committed to populist conservative values,” said radio talk show host, Mike Siegel. “His endorsement, and particularly his comment on fiscal responsibility, should also resonate with the grassroots movement.” “Mr. Eikenberry made it clear that this was a carefully considered decision because of the importance of this race,” said Didier. “I am humbled and grateful for his support.” Clint Didier, former 3-time Superbowl champ with the Washington Redskins, returned home to Eltopia, Washington to run his family farm with his wife, Kristie, three sons and daughter. He has also been endorsed by Sarah Palin and Ron Paul. JULY 9, 2010 RON PAUL ENDORSES CLINT DIDIER FOR SENATE LAKE JACKSON, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE) DIDIER REACTION TO RON PAUL ENDORSEMENT FOR U.S. SENATE “It’s a monumental honor to get the nod from a patriot like Ron Paul who has been in the trenches, fighting for more than 30 years to rein in out-of-control government,” said Didier. “I’m looking forward to working with his son Rand in the Senate, and other liberty movement candidates.” “I thank him for recognizing that someone like me – NOT the establishment party’s insider – will have the courage and grit to stand up to government bail outs, sweetheart deals and the temptation of pork-barrel politics.” “Dr. Paul knows so well that our Founders gave us a game plan –the Constitution. And if we just go back to following it, we can get our country back on track.” Said Kathryn Serkes, advisor to the Didier campaign, “This is another indication that Washington State is a key battleground race. “There is absolutely no doubt that the grassroots, not the political establishment, will call the shots in elections this year.” Clint Didier, former 3-time Superbowl champ with the Washington Redskins, returned home to Washington state to run his family farm with his wife, Kristie, three sons and daughter. He has also been endorsed by Sarah Palin. JULY 2010 CLINT DIDIER: A STRONG DECISIVE LEADER FOR AMERICA. WHY WE NEED HIM IN THE UNITED STATES SENATE By Gary P Jackson PALIN TWIBE Leadership. It’s an ability you either have, or you don’t. Clint Didier is a born leader. A lifelong farmer, Clint was drafted into the National Football League out of Portland State University by the Washington Redskins, where he spent seven seasons and played in three Super Bowls. He would go on to play for the Green Bay Packers for two more seasons. When Clint retired in 1990 he bought a farm close to the original family farm in Eastern Washington. He also owns a successful excavation business. Both of these are tough businesses that require strong, bold leadership to survive. But that’s not all Clint has done. Clint also devoted nine years to coaching the Connell High School football program. Under Clint’s strong leadership, the team won two state championships and was second twice. Ronald Reagan used to talk about leadership. Reagan said "Raise the banner of bold colors, not pale pastels." What he meant was we need strong leadership with big ideas. Bold ideas. Just as it was in 1975 when Reagan first made that speech, now is the time for bold leaders, not the timid. The reason I write today is to talk about the differences between the two front running candidates for the Republican nomination in Washington state: Clint Didier and Dino Rossi. On paper these two gentlemen may appear similar. Both are billed as Conservatives. To be honest, Rossi had a decent record during his two terms as a state Senator and before leaving the Senate to run for Governor, was chair of the Ways and Means Committee. But when you start looking at the issues, and the way both men approach them, you start seeing some stunning differences. The best way to put it is this: Clint Didier is a plain spoken, no nonsense guy who tells you what he thinks. He doesn’t do nuance. No doubt, this is one of the reasons Sarah Palin endorsed him. She doesn’t do nuance either. You check him out on the issues and there isn’t a lot of grey area to drift around in. Check Clint out on the issues here. Bold, decisive, no nonsense. Now at first glance, Dino Rossi seems to be on the same page. But if you really look where Rossi is, you see some differences. Strong differences. Let’s take Health Care for example. Specifically, ObamaCare. Clint Didier just says, point blank, it’s unconstitutional. The government has no right and no business fooling around with health care. Not their job. No where in the Constitution does it give Congress the authority to do what it’s done. Plain, simple and correct. On the other hand, Rossi is a tad more timid, nuanced, and vague. Oh, he has the right idea and points out all of the things wrong with ObamaCare, and talks about the backroom deals and how this is only going to destroy health care in America. On his website, his official position is this: Replace Pelosi-Reid healthcare bill with something that will actually lower health insurance costs , improve access to a greater variety of health insurance plans, and give people choice in picking their doctors. Sounds great. Where do I sign up? The problem is, on the very same page, right above it, he also says this: We need to repeal the parts of this bill which hurt access to and coverage for quality affordable health care, and replace it with common - sense bipartisan proposals. Two problems here. Obviously the first part is where he says "We need to repeal the parts ..." Repeal PARTS? Really? That sure sounds a whole lot like Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski’s nuanced position that ObamaCare is a "work in progress." She was also talking about repealing ObamaCare at one point, but has gotten quite soft on the issue, as we pointed out here. It’s a tad concerning that Rossi isn’t even in office yet and we aren’t sure where he is on this deal. I can’t hammer him for being a Big Government Statist like Murkowski, but this is certainly a squishy establishment Republican kind of position. My second problem here is it seems that Rossi is more concerned about developing a bi-partisan plan, than a good one. Or at the least, just as concerned about it. Bi-partisanship is a fine thing IN THEORY, but if we have leaned anything at all since the Marxist-democrats took control of Congress almost 4 years ago, and especially since the Obama regime came to power, to the Marxist-democrats, bi-partisanship means you do it their way, or else. We’ve already seen the damage the reach-across-the aisle crowd is capable of. They are way too timid, and way too quick to compromise just to get a deal, any deal. They are little more than enablers to Marxist radicals who are destroying our Republic. We got enough milquetoast, squishes on our side. The Marxist-democrats are ruthless and never give an inch on anything, and never compromise on their evil plans for the country. We shouldn’t compromise on plans to take our nation back! We need to get back to being the Constitutional Republic the founders created. I will say this, Dino Rossi was successful as a reach-across-the-aisle-er in the State Senate, but that ain’t D.C.! George W. Bush was incredibly successful as the Governor of Texas at working with hard core democrats to get real things done. However, at that point in time there were few Marxists in the Texas democrat party. Once Bush became President, he went out of his way to reach out to the Marxist-democrats. Basically let Teddy Kennedy write the education bill. We all know how the Marxists thanked him. As troubling as it is to know that we don’t exactly know what Rossi’s stance on Health care is, it’s even more troubling to think that Rossi may not realize that we are at a state of war with the radical left, for the soul of the nation and the survival of the Republic. . Energy is another area where it’s easy to see why Sarah Palin speaks so well of Clint. These two are simpatico. Clint embraces the idea of "Drill baby, drill" and why not. We have an estimated 300 years of recoverable oil, and that’s if we don’t import a drop. Like Sarah, Clint ties energy independence into national security. Over the coming decades, as China and Russia grow, this will be our number one national security issue. Clint recognizes we need to reel in the out of control EPA, and the environmental extremists, that do more harm than good, and start building some refineries as well. Clint does talk about some renewable energy , but he puts a huge emphasis on nuclear power. Not only would the construction phase of both refineries and nuclear power plants create good, well paying jobs, and a lot of them, so would the finished facilities. Good, sustainable jobs. We are never going to see a time where we don’t need energy. Our only question is do we do it for ourselves, or rely on other nations, and hope they don’t decided at some point to either stop supplying it to us, or make it so expensive we can’t afford it. France gets over 75 percent of it’s electricity from nuclear powered plants. FRANCE. If they can do it, we can do it, and do it better. Rossi is a little more timid, and a lot more vague on energy. While he seems to be against cap and tax, a good thing, the rest of his positions tend to be less than ideal. His plan relies a lot on "alternative energy" sources, and a steadily increasing reliance on them. The problem is, as we point out here, people have been throwing money down the bottomless pit of "alternative energy" for over a half century, and overall, we are using LESS alternative energy, not more. The problem is, none of the alternatives really work, and even the ones that marginally do, can only survive with massive government subsidies. Not a good plan when times are booming, and times are definitely not booming! Though he doesn’t come right out and say it, as you read his positions on energy, you can see he’s trying to court both reality based Conservatives, and the flat earth society greens who believe in nonsense like global warming. You can check out all of Dino Rossi’s postions on the issues here. He’s not horrible, but the lack of bold, authoritative answers leave a lot to be desired. In short, there’s a better, bolder, stronger candidate. Another example of Rossi’s timidity is shown in the video below. Here he and Clint are debating what to do with the Fed:
JUNE 29, 2010 “The FEC attack on Campaign for Liberty is a desperate effort by the Establishment to control speech and freedom. “It’s clearly a nuisance attack intended to drain the resources of a taxpayer-supported, ground-up grassroots organization by unleashing a flood of legal maneuvers from a massive team of government lapdogs. “They haven't been able to stop the "liberty steamroller" through verbal bashing, so now thay will try to siphon off the movement's money to be wasted on defending these hollow claims. “Folks this is it. They are coming after our 1st Amendments rights, our 2nd Amendment rights and trying to ruin the Constitution. We all have to be all in!” ---- PLEASE SIGN THE "DECLARATION OF SUPPORT ---- MAY 28, 2010 PRESS RELEASE PARTICIPATION IN THE USDA FARM SERVICE PROGRAMS Since declaring my candidacy for the U. S. Senate considerable criticism has been made of my participation in the USDA Farm Service programs. Yes, as a farmer I have been a recipient of monies from FSA programs. However, my past participation does not preclude my belief it is time to end the government farm subsidy program; let farmers become self-sufficient and build their own internal insurance and cooperative relief programs. These government programs, make agriculture an industry held hostage for political purposes. I’ve now been farming for 20 years after retiring from the NFL. Farming can be both trying and rewarding . In l944, several USDA predecessor agencies were merged into FSA and primarily tasked with implementation of farm conservation and regulation laws around the country. To soften crop losses when a natural disaster occurs, FSA offers a crop insurance program entitled NAP. Every year, I have purchased this crop insurance , and twice I have been paid for crop losses. In order to qualify for NAP, your Governor must designate your area a disaster besides meeting other USDA mandated program requirements. To receive 50% of a 50% crop loss (25% of the crop value), an average two-year wait is usually required. Not the greatest insurance policy ever written. I have also participated in Commodity Credit Corporation programs created in l933 to “stabilize, support, and protect farm income and prices” through acreage payments. Our nation has always supported a cheap food policy. Some years back, when the price of wheat became too high, our government conveniently dumped government stored wheat on the market to lower market price. When prices are too low, the farmer is “stabilized” through government acreage payments –a “help” to make up what the farmer’s income should, or could, have been. Participants certify yearly with their local FSA office acres planted and to what crop. If your current acreage enrollment is out of whack, too many acres of one commodity based on your past production, you are ineligible for participation. This allows the government to exercise control over planted acres of certain commodities. Although the public is continually told of huge farm payments through USDA programs, what is generally not known is 72% of these subsidies are earmarked for child nutrition, food stamp programs, and temporary assistance for needy families. Perhaps the USDA Farm Bill is mis-labeled and should be called the USDA Welfare Bill. In 2002, only ll% of appropriated monies went to farmers. The other 17% went to other categories; the biggest of those being titled miscellaneous. The American farmer is the most efficient in the world – supplying the American public with the finest quality produce, grains, fruits and dairy products. Continued government micro-management, over-regulation, and restrictive practices places our abundant food supply in jeopardy. Currently, 50% of the produce available to the American consumer is brought in from foreign producers who do not have to meet the same standards required of the American farmer as it relates to the use of fertilizers, chemicals, and pesticide applications. In 2001, Al Gore advised a young Future Farmer of America to look for a new occupation because ALL of our food would eventually be imported. Europe realized during World II, the incontestable value of their own reliable food supply and have since jealously guarded the well-being of their food producers. Any nation dependent on importation of their food is at the mercy of the supplier. Clint Didier Candidate for U.S. Senate TOP HOME MAY 26, 2010 MAY 20, 2010 PRESS RELEASE SARAH PALIN ENDORSES CLINT DIDIER FOR U.S. SENATE Seattle, WA - Clint Didier (R-WA) today received the official endorsement of Sarah Palin for his bid for the Senate from Washington State. The former Alaska Governor released the following statement on her Facebook site: “I’m proud to support Clint Didier as he willingly puts it all on the line to serve Washington State in the U.S. Senate for all the right reasons! This selfless, inspiring, commonsense constitutional conservative will help put our country on the right track. Please visit Clint’s website and follow him on Twitter. Let’s get behind #86!” “I am humbled and honored to receive Governor Palin’s endorsement,” said Didier. “And now there’s not any doubt who the grassroots candidate is in this race.” Didier said that it’s also a clear signal that establishment, career politicians are OUT. “People want someone to stand shoulder to shoulder with them and take on Washington, D.C. – a citizen statesman, not a polished politician – just like Sarah and the grassroots are doing.” Didier, who is in the middle of Alfalfa harvesting this week at his farm in Eastern Washington, said endorsement came at a particularly good time. “It’s been a rough week. The storms this week hit our crop hard and we’ve taken a big loss,” said Didier, whose wife and sons are working to keep the farm going while he campaigns. Daughter Brandie is out on the campaign trail as his Chief of Staff. “Gov. Palin is right – I have put it all on the line for the race,” said Didier, who resigned as coach of a state championship high school football team, and put his earth-moving business on hold. He said Washingtonians want someone who won‘t be compromised when he gets to Washington – by compromising across the aisle, or if his own party waffles on the issues. “I’ve said from the start that I’m not a polished politician. I’m running only because like so many other Americans, I’ve sat back and watched while our elected officials have lost total respect for the fruits of the people’s labor and their freedoms. That’s when I decided to run.” “My opponents know that people are rallying around me and my message,” said Didier. "Its’ clear that it’s no longer enough to have an ‘R’ after your name or come from the ‘big city.’ People want an outsider, someone they can believe in. I’m a farmer from a little Eastern Washington town by the name of Eltopia." “This dispels any doubt that Patty Murray is beatable by a strong candidate like Clint Didier,” said Bellevue businessman, Kemper Freeman, Didier’s campaign Finance Chair “But we’re up against a pretty big bucket of money. As an incumbent, Patty Murray has a special-interest fuelled multi-million dollar campaign war chest.” Clint Didier Candidate for U.S. Senate TOP HOME
MAY 1, 2010 PRESS RELEASE DIDIER IN U.S. SENATE RACE TO THE END Former NFL Champion Says Rossi Can't Win If He Comes In Clint Didier said today he would not leave the U.S. Senate Race if Dino Rossi gets in, or for any other reason. Didier was asked at a recent forum if he would leave the race if Dino Rossi gets in. He issued the following statement: “As of the current FEC report, I’m the leading candidate, having raised more campaign funds from individual donors than all other candidates put together. We’ve posted hundreds of large signs up all across the state – again, far more than all other candidates. We didn’t do all of that for nothing. APRIL 23, 2010 COLLEGE REPUBLICANS STRAW POLL GOES TO DIDIER By Jim Camden | Spokesman Review The Washington College Republicans just released the results of the straw poll from their recent convention in Spokane, and they’re backing Clint Didier…although with a couple of caveats. First, while there are 11 announced GOP candidates looking to oust Patty Murray in the U.S. Senate race this year, they only invited the ones “deemed most likely to win the primary.” Of that group, they had a few that declined, David Bergman of the Gonzaga College Republicans said. Unfortunately, Craig Williams was unable to attend due to a conflict in his work schedule. Sean Salazar opted to spend the weekend focused on the west side of the state, rather than accepting a request to speak before the gathering of College Republicans from across the state, in the county that contains the largest concentration of elected republicans in the state. Chris Widener was also unable to attend,” Bergman wrote in a press release. So only four showed up. Then the group took two straw polls, one for all in attendance and one for just the College Republicans. Didier finished with 75 percent of the votes in the first, with Paul Akers, Art Coday and Don Benton trailing far behind. Didier got 60 percent in the second, followed by Coday, Akers and Benton. TOP HOME MARCH 23, 2010 PRESS RELEASE SENATE CANDIDATE CLINT DIDIER ON PASSAGE OF HEALTHCARE BILL “The power under the Constitution will always be in the people. It is entrusted for certain defined purposes, and for a certain limited period, to representatives of their own choosing; and whenever it is executed contrary to their interest, or not agreeable to their wishes, their servants can, and undoubtedly will, be recalled.” Nationalized Health Care is now the law of the land in America, forced onto us by an administration that is hell bent on socializing every aspect of American life as we know it. I am doing everything in my power to see that does not happen and defeating Patty Murray is my first step to that end. The November, 2010 election is going to be enormously important if we are to stop this runaway spending train that is now in office. We can take this country back by voting GOP in November…and let us never forget who voted yes for Obamacare. MARCH 17, 2010 CLINT DIDIER, PATTY MURRAY OPPONENT, RUNNING ON HIS (SUPER BOWL) RECORD By Rick Anderson, Seattle Weekly Shall we call the November Senate election now and save the time, money and tedium? No other state congressional incumbent has more official challengers than Sen. Patty Murray, but no one has more money, exposure, or ability to dole out federal funds, either. The three-term Democrat is so far officially opposed by eleven Republicans and one Independent who together have raised roughly $155,000 compared to Murray's nearly $9 million, of which she's already spent about $4 million. Opponents might be lucky to raise in total what Murray took in during one day last month, $500,000, at a Seattle fundraiser featuring Vice President Joe Biden. The incumbent is so far running against mostly unknowns and little-knowns, such as state Sen. Don Benton. Others include author Chris Widener of Preston, Seattle chiropractor Sean Salazar, Lynnwood physician Arthur Coday, Vancouver energy trader Craig Williams and Marysville businessman Rod Reiger. But there is also former NFL player and Super Bowler Clint Didier, who just picked up the endorsement of Bellevue developer and GOP leader Kemper Freeman, who has also become Didier's state financial chairman. That could fill up the coffers for the farm kid who went on to play for the Washington Redskins, something he's making the most of in an attempted return to D.C. "Where else," he says, "can the son of a potato farmer from a small town in Eastern Washington rise to play in the stardom of a Super Bowl?" His campaign emphasizes his football career as a 6-5 tight end for the Redskins, pointing out he even threw the block that cleared the way for John Riggins' winning touchdown in Super Bowl XVII. "Following my NFL career," says Didier, "I came home to work the farm, coach other young men, and now to repay a debt to my country for what it's given me." And of course he has a "game plan," and not an unexpected one for a farmer from the Right Side of the mountains. According to a story posted on his website: "Disgusted at the confirmation of Obama administration officials such as Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who failed to pay social security or self-employment taxes from 2001 to 2004, and former "Green Jobs" czar Van Jones, who has Marxist affiliations and believes in 9/11 conspiracy theories, Didier announced at a Tea Party held last month in the Tri-Cities that he was considering running for the U.S. Senate next year against Democrat Patty Murray. In his speech, he proclaimed that "I can honestly say I do not trust my government." Notes the interviewer: "People tell Clint that he has no chance to beat Patty Murray. But people have been underestimating Didier his whole life. Clint told me that you have to play football with 'controlled rage.' And he plans to take that controlled rage back to Washington, D.C. to fight for limited government based on the Constitution." To that end, he has so far raised $89,000, one percent of Murray's haul. But, as Didier surely would say, it's a long season. MARCH 3, 2010 PRESS RELEASE KEMPER FREEMAN, Jr. JOINS CLINT DIDIER IN U.S. SENATE BID Bellevue businessman and former legislator endorses Didier Clint Didier announced today he has received the formal endorsement of Bellevue's Kemper Freeman, Jr. in Didier's bid for the U.S. Senate. Freeman also agreed to serve as State Chairman of the Didier Finance Committee. "This is a very important endorsement for us." The eastern Washington candidate stated. "Getting support from someone like Kemper Freeman, Jr. to our campaign is huge, and only points to the fact that we have the right message, at the right time for Washington State, and are on track to take this campaign to the next level with the goal of replacing Murray in 2010." The Didier campaign leads the field of Republican candidates in fundraising to date. Clint Didier is a former NFL tight end and two-time Super Bowl Champion. Born into a farm family in Eltopia, Washington, Didier rose to play nine years in the NFL, seven of those with the Washington Redskins. Following his NFL career, Clint returned to Eltopia with his wife to raise a family of four children and continue farming where he began. "I see Clint as just the kind of man we need in Washington today," said Freeman of his endorsement. "He's a proven champion who isn't making this effort for any reason except to truly serve the people of this state and bring our runaway government spending under control." The Freeman's are a third generation Bellevue family, owners and developers of Bellevue Square, Bellevue Place and Lincoln Square. Kemper Freeman served in the state legislature in the 1970's and is a major player in Republican politics. "Kemper is a shining example of true American business success. I'm proud to have his support," said Didier. "He is an excellent example of the American entrepreneurial spirit." Clint Didier, Senatorial Candidate TOP HOME OCTOBER 22, 2009 That dream came true. Later that year, Didier dreamed that he would no longer be with the the Redskins and watch from afar as they played in another Super Bowl. That dream also came true. Now, Clint dreams of going back to Washington, D.C., this time as a U.S. Senator, to rein in what he sees as a government out of control. Disgusted at the confirmation of Obama administration officials such as Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who failed to pay social security or self-employment taxes from 2001 to 2004, and former "Green Jobs" czar Van Jones, who has Marxist affiliations and believes in 9/11 conspiracy theories, Didier announced at a Tea Party held last month in the Tri-Cities that he was considering running for the U.S. Senate next year against Democrat Patty Murray. In his speech, he proclaimed that "I can honestly say I do not trust my government" and that "I, Clint Didier, want to answer the call to service. I want to work toward a return to the Constitution and its precepts." I had an opportunity to speak with Clint last night in Kennewick following a meeting of his Senate exploratory committee. The ruggedly handsome, 6'5" former tight end is an imposing presence. Even at age 50, he looks like he could still suit up and throw the block that cleared the way for John Riggins' winning touchdown in Super Bowl XVII. The overflow crowd at Tony Roma's was inspired as Didier passionately spoke of how we need to take back the Republican Party and get back to the common ground that Ronald Reagan once held. His platform is simple: Responsibility, accountability, and national security. Didier is afraid Americans are losing their freedoms and their ability to make money and therefore, grow the tax base. He has four kids, with his first grandchild on the way. Clint wants to make a difference for them and for our country. In this day of multi-millionaire, primadonna sports stars who take performance-enhancing drugs and frequently have brushes with the law, Clint Didier is a throwback to a bygone era. Didier's parents scratched out a hard living farming in the arid lands of the Columbia Basin. The future two-time Super Bowl champion learned the values of hard work, discipline, dedication, and persistence while doing chores on the farm such as moving irrigation equipment. Didier played for a state championship at Connell High School, then went on to win a junior college state championship as a wide receiver at Columbia Basin College. He was recruited by legendary "run-and-shoot" coach Darrel "Mouse" Davis to play at Portland State University. At Portland State, Didier became one of the favorite targets of future St. Louis Cardinals quarterback Neil Lomax, who broke an NCAA record by throwing seven TD passes in one quarter. It was Lomax that the NFL scouts came to see, not Didier. No one ever thought Didier, a kid from rural Eastern Washington, could make it in the NFL. But underdog Didier would prove them all wrong. He hit the weight room religiously. He visualized success. He constantly pictured himself making one-handed catches, so that when the ball came his way, he just reacted. When rookie head coach of the Washington Redskins, Joe Gibbs, came to Portland to work out Neil Lomax, Didier acted as the receiver. He vowed to catch every ball Lomax threw to make him look good. In the end, it was Didier that Gibbs wanted to talk to, not Lomax. General Manager Booby Beathard ended up drafting Didier in the 12th round of the 1981 draft (the 1981 Redskins draft class has been been ranked seventh best of all time by the NFL.) Didier said that he was blessed to have played for Joe Gibbs. Gibbs brought tight ends into camp every year to compete for his job. But, as Didier, pointed out, it was that competition that made him a better player. Clint made only $35,000 his rookie year and was placed on injured reserve. In his second year, Didier missed nine games because of a player's strike and he and his wife had to work odd jobs to make ends meet. But by the end of the championship 1982 season, he had become a key part of the Redskins offense, both as a blocker and receiver. Didier went on to play in three Super Bowls with the Redskins, gaining 1,815 receiving yards and catching 19 TD passes before finishing his career with the Green Bay Packers. After football, Didier returned home to Washington to raise alfalfa, grass seed, wheat, and popping corn on an 1,100 acre farm in Eltopia and also operate an earthmoving business. More importantly, he wanted to give back to the community. He took a job as co-head football coach at his old high school in Connell, leading the Eagles to a state championship in 2002 and runners-up at state in 2006 and 2007. Didier is proud of making a positive impact on these young men's lives, and says that is the thing he will miss most during his Senate campaign. Since Didier had invoked Ronald Reagan, I asked him what he thought of the Gipper after meeting him twice following his Super Bowl victories. Didier said he was impressed, although he didn't realize until later what a great leader Reagan was. One of Didier's most prized possesions is an autograph of Reagan that he received after the President and First Lady greeted the Redskins on the runway after they flew home from Super Bowl XVII. The last time I saw Didier was at the Super Bowl victory parade held on February 3, 1988. I lived in the D.C. area during the Redskins glory years of the Eighties and early Nineties. I've been a lifelong fan. So, I had to ask Didier what his favorite moment as a Redskin was. He said it was catching the only touchdown pass in Super Bowl history from an African-American quarterback (Doug Williams in Super Bowl XXII) to a white receiver. Coincidentally, this is my favorite Redskin memory as well. I watched Super Bowl XXII at my friend's house in Southeast D.C., a predominantly African-American area. But after the Skins triumphant come-from-behind victory, there was no color bar in D.C.. We were all, however briefly, just happy fans. Clint and I agreed on the unifying effect that sports can have. He also talked of how he learned life's most important lessons on the gridiron; how to overcome adversity, how to stand up for yourself, how to measure a man by his worth and not the color of his skin, and how to tell right from wrong. These are the principles that we as Republicans should stand for. People tell Clint that he has no chance to beat Patty Murray. But people have been underestimating Didier his whole life. Clint told me that you have to play football with "controlled rage." And he plans to take that controlled rage back to Washington, D.C. to fight for limited government based on the Constitution. Big time pro sports didn't change Clint Didier and neither will Capitol Hill. We can count on Clint to uphold liberty and not succumb to the "Beltway Disease" that other elected Republicans suffer from. But before Clint can go to D.C., he needs money to get his campaign off the ground and establish himself as a legitimate candidate. I urge you to go to Clint's website www.clintdidier.org and contribute all you can. Patty Murray already has $2 million in the bank. One final note: After my interview with Clint was over, he found out that my girlfriend's son plays football. Clint took the time to give some tips to him on how to properly catch a football. What an exciting and unforgetable moment it was for this young boy to get personal coaching from a man who owns two Super Bowl rings. That, to me, says it all about Clint Didier. |
